Web site defacement can have more insidious purposes than just showing off the site hacker's ability. By changing news stories, a hacker can convince readers of untrue "facts" - or even redirect them to site imposters.

Introduction: Web Site Defacement

Web site defacement is widespread and has become the playground for vandals and dissidents. Although most of these attacks have been mere pranks or airing of grievances, changing the contents of a web site can lead to more insidious results. In the hands of a malicious intruder, web site defacement can be used to spread propaganda, rumors, and misinformation meant to confuse or even create alarm.
