You can use your Google Nexus Tablet as a GPS Navigation device while you are walking or driving around. Your tablet also includes a new app called Google Now that provides you all the information you need when you need it.

Google Now

You can access Google Now from the lock screen or from any screen and allows you to search the Internet. Google Now provides you with information such as how long it will take to drive to work and the scores from your favorite teams.

  1. Touch and speak a request or type a search term.
  2. Cards relevant to your search or request appear.
  3. Cards also automatically appear based on your settings. Examples of these alerts are scores for games the sports teams you follow played recently, upcoming meetings, weather in the location where you work, traffic on the way to work, and others that may be added in the future.

Setting Up Google Now

For Google Now to work for you, you should set it up correctly. This means you need to set up Google Now, but you also have to set up Google Maps, which is used heavily by Google Now.

  1. Touch the Menu button.
  2. Touch Settings.

  3. Touch Google Now.
  4. Touch to change how Google Now shows you weather information. You can change when the card appears, where it must show you weather, and the units to use.
  5. Touch to change how Google Now shows you traffic information. You can change when the card appears, the mode of transportation (for example, public transportation or driving), and if it should appear for normal traffic or only for heavy traffic.
  6. Touch to change how Google Now shows meeting information. You can change when the card appears (for example for every meeting or only ones that are far away).
  7. Touch to change how Google Now shows travel information. For example, you can have it only appear if the place you are travelling to uses a different language.
  8. Touch to change how Google Now shows flight information.
  9. Touch to change how Google Now shows public transit information.
  10. Touch to change how Google Now shows nearby places as you travel.
  11. Touch to change how sports team information is shown and when.
  12. Touch to choose the ringtone that is played when Google Now needs to alert you.
  13. Touch to choose whether you want to feel a vibration when Google Now alerts you.

  18. Touch to block or allow offensive words to be spoken when search results are returned by voice.
  19. Touch to enable or disable Hotword Detection. When enabled, Google Now is always listening for you to say the word Google and it then launches voice search. As of the writing of this book the feature doesn’t work.
  20. Touch to download speech recognition software so you can do voice searches even when you’re not connected to the Internet. You can download multiple languages.
  21. Touch to save your changes and return to the main Settings screen.
  22. Touch to choose which apps installed on your tablet are searched when you do a search in Google Now.
  23. Touch to save your changes and return to Google Now.

Setting Up Google Maps
