Most people either use Excel or they don't. But even those who don't use it figure that maybe they should learn just enough to be dangerous. In this section we're going to use our sample company (Surrealty) to generate an Excel document as an example of how the program works.

People who need Excel (or any spreadsheet program) generally know they need it and learn it inside and out. I'll try to provide some new ideas in this section for them, but this quick and easy Office Guide is really for the rest of us—those who suspect that there's a lot of value in Excel but are a bit intimidated by its obvious depth, and by those huge spreadsheets we've seen experts create and use. So we're going to use Excel for a practical purpose that can be applied to almost any endeavor: tracking and planning finances for a business. For our mythical Surrealty Corporation, we'll create an expense account spreadsheet, and then quickly learn how to export the newly calculated values into another worksheet that might become a monthly or annual budget.
